On this album, Kacey has succeeded in concocting a set of love songs intimate and intricate enough that it starts to feel like this record is loving you right back, gently guiding a path toward the audacity of an old hope that has, once again, begun to feel possible.

The record summons up the 1970s soft-rock and disco crossovers of Dolly Parton, Olivia Newton-John, and Anne Murray, not to mention ’90s Shania and Sheryl Crow.

Her most sonically adventurous album that blends her traditional country roots ("Space Cowboy") with... vocoders (the Tame Impala-esque "Oh What a World").

It feels like a natural progression, and it shouldn’t turn any old fans off; hopefully it’ll just pull in new ones.

A lovely, unexpectedly romantic record with two early singles, “Butterflies” and “Space Cowboy,” already hailed as among 2018’s best yet.

The closing pair of tunes in “Golden Hour” and “Rainbow” (a McCartney-like song which is waiting to be synched to a film scene and soundtrack) showcase this record well and truly make the album one of the best I’ve heard in the past couple of years.

To me, a fellow Texan from a speck on the map roughly the size of Musgraves’s beloved hometown of Golden, it’s everything good about country music, written and performed by someone who has no interest in leaving the genre behind.

Six months from now, the only people talking about this album might the ones who love to champion artists’ public personas over the music itself because it just lacks the underlying edge or grit you need in country to grasp onto people’s souls for the long term.

Though Golden Hour might take time to relax into, the set is a fine lava-lamp soundtrack, and if “country” suggests engaging American musical traditions with respect and pioneer spirit, then this album is as country as it comes.

The very sound of Golden Hour is seductive -- it's warm and enveloping, pitched halfway between heartbreak and healing -- but the album lingers in the mind because the songs are so sharp, buttressed by long, loping melodies and Musgraves' affectless soul-baring.

Golden Hour doesn't carry quite the same bite as either 2015 predecessor Pageant Material or 2013's Sam Trailer Different Park, preferring a more loved-up vibe that favours pillowy sophisti-pop over bittersweet country. [May 2018, p.30]

AHHH! A new side of Kacey! So exciting!

Disappointing I love kacey, been a fan for years, and she is one of my favorite songwriters. I know she is growing and wanting to try new styles, but for me this is a negative departure from her classic wit and turn-a-phrase. Just not for me, but I still love and support her and her message. I’m willing to let it grow on me, she has more than earned that.

Really sad to hear It’s really sad to listen to this album and basically realize that Kacey, one of the last females in outlaw-style country, turned pop-ish with this offering. I don’t know how this has such great reviews... I suspect it has to be due to either very new fans, or people who primarily like Kacey for her social beliefs but are not too familiar with her musical sound up until this point. But as an outlaw country fan and previous fan of Kacey’s, I’m so disappointed.
