The people behind him never allowed him to breathe, and make something memorable.

Ultimately, 7 EP as a whole proves far too generic, flat, and predictably radio-ready.

Highsnobiety Highsnobiety

The crudeness and lack of sophistication of the tracks on “7” are essential to their appeal, much in the way that a goofy eight-bit graphic is often funnier and more charming than an elaborate animation, and not simply for reasons of nostalgia.

This EP doesn’t make much of a splash.

7 is as much about figuring out what made “Old Town Road” land as it is about delivering a satisfying sequel.

GQ Magazine GQ Magazine

7 proves that Lil Nas X's versatility and eclectic taste will be one of his defining factors as a musician.

Exclaim Exclaim

Lil Nas X is a passable rapper, but 7 proves that his true focus is melody—a universal, boundary-obliterating delivery service that makes his songs, in spite of their stylistic eclecticism, go down almost deceptively easy.

As valiant as his efforts were, I foresee the one-hit curse following Lil Nas X like the plague.

7 is musical Chex Mix — lightweight and best consumed in selective increments, but also strangely addictive.

Consequence of Sound Consequence of Sound

A collection of eight unfocused songs that all seem to have been conceived—except for “Old Town Road” and it’s remix—using a paint by numbers methodology specifically engineered to recreate the crossover success of his smash single.

The EP is fun, but confirms that Lil Nas X doesn't quite know what to do.

The project "7" does not even know where it wants to go.

lautde lautde

There are enough hooks in this bouquet of confusing-if-passable genre-hopping tracks to keep him on the path to future hits, but nothing comes remotely close to the lightning in a bottle of "Old Town Road"'s accidental perfection.

Entertainment Weekly Entertainment Weekly (TOP)

It achieves what a quick EP after a monster hit must: It keeps hope alive while buying time to work on a more realized album.

For being an EP whipped together quickly in an effort to beat the one-hit wonder clock, Lil Nas X’s 7 is, above everything, a solid, promising start.

Wow Actually it’s not bad at all 😭 I weirdly like it and even though some of this sounds like it’s meant to be a joke, I respect him for not fitting the mold of literally every new rapper ever 🤷🏽‍♂️

Sounds GREAT! Proud of Lil Nas X and his rise to stardom. This first EP sounds GREAT! He is killing every genre of music with this EP. Its really something for everybody on this album.
