It succeeds because the album is pleasingly bonkers—funny and unexpected, but undergirded by skill and emotion.

It’s still unclear if Malone amounts to a flash-in-the-pan, or will one day reveal himself to be an artist who truly has something to say.

The Post Malone who appears on beerbongs & bentleys is someone I’m struggling to remember. At the height of his celebrity, on an album where he tries to get more personal, the biggest issue is how humdrum it all sounds.

The thing is, though, is Beerbongs and Bentleys is a great listen, despite the void at its center. Post Malone may have the self-awareness of the recently concussed, but he’s a melodic savant with a chameleon's eye for the reigning trends in pop music.

Listening to Beerbongs' opening run of could-be-smashes, it becomes abundantly clear that though his resume as a rapper might be slightly muddled, the dude is a pop savant.

Is beerbongs & bentleys rich enough to be listened to more than once? I believe so.

Essentially a fusion of pop trends such as autotuned rap, Ed Sheeran-style acoustic drippiness and druggy torpor.

These songs are hollow vessels, mood pieces equally suitable for zoning out or showing out.

Stereogum Stereogum

The 18 tracks of Beerbongs become an ouroboros of new-money narcissism: Post's obsession with flexing, partying, and banging groupies feeds a growing paranoia that the people around him only like him for exactly those attributes. And it is no small irony that the album's most convincing moments occur when he drops the cool rapper pretense and gets all lonesome cowboy.

Many of the songs deal in wavy synths and trap beats, but a few tracks show an appetite for experimentation that reflects poorly on the rest of the album.

Beerbongs & Bentleys’ defects might be less evident in smaller doses, if you consider it less as an album than a collection of songs made for picking and choosing, for filleting on to playlists, then the aforementioned hooks, choruses and production touches might well outweigh the repetitiousness and predictability.

“Same Bitches” sounds like a song Ty Dolla $ign once made and ultimately scrapped, and Post was more than happy to turn another man’s trash into his treasure, no matter how awkward or forced he sounds among more natural fits G-Eazy and YG.

By no stretch of the imagination is Beerbongs & Bentleys a good album, but it’s admirable in its commitment to its strangely singular dirtbag vision of L.A. luxury. It isn’t consistent enough to mold Post Malone fully into the Soundcloud rap version of Ed Sheeran, but it will certainly allow him to stick around for at least a few more years.

Beerbongs & Bentleys is an apt reflection of his lavish lifestyle and his subsequently begotten hardships, but its attempts at sincerity work only when Post Malone stops trying so hard.

At times it’s almost impressive how long an album called Beerbongs & Bentleys can go without cracking a smile. It is more assured and impressive than its predecessor, Stoney, but it’s also more exhausting.

This moment of fuzzed-out, fucked-up pop music with questionably scant odes to rap music is not designed for posterity. To his credit, Post gets that, and is content to make overlong albums where every song can be a single. Not every song on beerbongs and bentleys can be a single, but there’s enough of them hiding in there to make it one of 2018’s more rewarding releases.

There are occasional intrusions of other ideas, like the agonized rock on “Over Now,” and when far more formalist artists like Nicki Minaj or G-Eazy arrive, they sound like teachers trying to enforce order in detention. But in total, Beerbongs & Bentleys is admirably committed to form, one long song of the decontextualized now.

Beerbongs & Bentleys contains banger after banger; it's an incredible drug-induced album.
