All-original music from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (the same lyricists behind La La Land and Dear Evan Hansen) is paired with exciting choreography (which in turn is bolstered by some great camera work) for songs that will stay in your brain long after you leave the theater.

And 10 days after seeing the movie, as I type these words, I don’t stand a chance of NOT hearing that tune (titled “The Greatest Show”) all over again. It’s the first of at least a half-dozen undeniably addictive numbers.

While composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul ("La La Land," "Dear Evan Hansen") aren't exactly Rodgers and Hart they have a knack for instantly hummable melodic lines and big, powerful choruses.

The show-stopping numbers are well-choreographed and feature catchy tunes (courtesy of La La Land’s duo of Benj Pasek & Justin Paul)

The screen is cluttered with ten new songs by the woefully mediocre and bafflingly overrated songwriting team of Justin Paul and Benj Pasek, who won undeserved awards for the movie La La Land and the play Dear Evan Hansen. Nothing they’ve provided for The Greatest Showman comes close to the beauty and excitement of the Cy Coleman songs from Broadway’s Barnum.

OBSERVER OBSERVER

An old-fashioned musical with a none-more-zeitgeisty songsheet, it may not be a flawless piece of storytelling, but it’s a pretty decent show.

Hugh Jackman is an immensely talented singer and dancer, the music and choreography are incredibly impressive.

But there’s a deeply strange cognitive dissonance in watching performers in period dress sing and dance to contemporary pop songs.

Hugh Jackman is in full razzle-dazzle mode, singing, dancing and doing nimble things with a top hat. He’s a pro, of course, yet there’s something fundamentally unfascinating about his rugby-captain charisma. He’s unable to offset the film’s general flaw, the blandness in its drama and, especially, in its songs — generic schmaltzy pop.

The Greatest Showman, with a great boost from Oscar-winning La La Land lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, is a sensational celebration of a beloved movie staple with new twists and a massive song score that bridges contemporary pop with Broadway.

And among the original songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (who didn’t do badly with La La Land), there isn’t one that, thinking back as I write just a few hours after seeing the film, I could so much as hum.

The story really is as simple as that since it is the showstopper musical numbers that count here and La La Land composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul have risen to the occasion.

Showman's songs aren't remixes and covers, but all original, written by Oscar-winning La La Land composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. They were – unusually for a musical – still stuck in our heads the day after (particularly Efron/Zendaya duet 'Rewrite the Stars' and Lind's big number, 'Never Enough').

Empire Magazine Empire Magazine (TOP)

The songs, with music by John Debney and Joe Trapanese, lyrics by Pasek and Paul (the lyric writers for La La Land), are nearly all catchy anthems, with big orchestrations and huge choruses, sung by a dozen or so of Barnum's "freaks".

The contributions of Oscar-winning La La Land lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul likewise succumb to the film’s American Idol vocalizing, which ascend and descend the musical scale with a cynically calculated emotion.

The musical numbers are extravagantly staged, so overwhelming and exuberant that you may forget to notice if the singing and dancing is really any good. (It’s perfectly OK.)

Everyone can sing, everyone can dance—or, in the case of Michelle Williams, a professional double was obviously hired and regularly deployed—and while the songs aren’t especially memorable, most of them are anthemic empowerment ballads with strong back beats, so toe-tapping is easy.

Elaine L. Elaine L.

The good news is that the live-action musical is filled with charming and occasionally enchanted song-and-dance numbers.

It’s not so much the casting of Zac Efron and Zendaya as young lovers; it’s that they and the others are given upbeat pop songs and self-empowering anthems that would perhaps sound great (if generic) on their own, but simply feel jarring when sung by 19th-century characters in period dress.

Hugh Jackman carries the show, playing Barnum with an energy and reckless optimism that rekindles memories of Gene Kelly in his pomp but the songs aren’t especially memorable and the cringey sentimentality can’t help but dampen the mood.

It's got a great beat and you can dance to it (or Jackman, Efron and the rest can, anyway). And Barnum would have loved it.

The songs also strangely contemporary-sounding, as if you could hear them right now on a Hits 1 playlist.

I never met the man, but I doubt “You can do like you do” is something that P.T. Barnum would have said. Despite this, I’ve been listening to the soundtrack every day since it was released online earlier this month. A lot of it is mindless and overly simplistic, yet I catch myself tapping my foot to it anyway.

Set sometime in the 1840’s and scored to a tight array of tunes written by “La La Land” duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, “The Greatest Showman” might sound like the first Hollywood musical of the Jack Antonoff age (brace for maddeningly catchy pop songs full of hi-hats, deep bass fills, and IMAX-sized choruses), but this is an old-fashioned thing at heart.

Some of the music, which was written by “La La Land’s” Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, sounds like it’s straining a little too hard for mainstream pop appeal, suggesting that the soundtrack may not be a timeless one.

These songs are bad, folks. How bad? Midway through the movie, you may find yourself warily eyeing the major characters that haven’t sung yet: “Michelle Williams. She’s bound to sing something. So there’s at least that to sit through.”

San Francisco Chronicle San Francisco Chronicle

Overproduced, possibly auto-tuned, hitting a carotid-popping emotional climax in the first 10 seconds and staying there, the tunes ... are sub-Andrew Lloyd Webber schlock made bearable only by the conviction of the cast.

But there’s also something interesting about the movie’s deliberate musical anachronisms, which operate as kind of a crude unifying theory of poptimism, depicting everything from opera to circus sideshows as polished, MOR crossover hits, all millennial whoops, generically walloping beats, and self-actualization.

At any rate, Jackman gives this the muscular heft that it needs. He has the musical theatre chops and the film pizazz to sell it; he is approachably handsome and his singing voice is light, pleasant, yet strong and competent.

It has bright colors and high spirits, and it’s held together by a song score (from the Oscar-winning “La La Land” duo of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul) whose creamy-vanilla smoothness is as insipid as it is hard to resist.

First-time director Michael Gracey, working from a script by Jenny Bicks (Sex & the City) and Bill Condon (Chicago, Gods and Monsters, Dreamgirls), plunges ahead in a giddy rush, carving out ample opportunities for his stars to sing the soaring rock-opera compositions penned by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the gifted musical duo behind La La Land and Dear Evan Hansen.

The numbers in “The Greatest Showman” have a dance-pop fire that keeps you hooked, and that bursting-out quality recalls, at times, the spirit of “Moulin Rouge!”

But primarily the Pasek-Paul songs are blandly written, overproduced motivationspeak designed for chorus chanting, and that regrettably includes the oddities’ “I Am What I Am”-like plea for acceptance, “This Is Me.” It’s admirably belted by Settle, but paired poorly with a snow-filled march through the streets that looks cold instead of stirring.

TheWrap TheWrap

My hunch is that Pasek & Paul have crafted a terrific score, but the film buries it in pounding, processed, overdubbed orchestrations that make the voices sound disembodied and auto-tuned out any traces of human nuance.

On mere listen, the songs are tinny, the lyrics jumbles of senseless clichés, the melodies ground out of some viral pop-music machine.

The album is an exceptional example of what a movie musical soundtrack should be. In other words, as Jackman sings repeatedly, "it's everything you'd ever want, it's everything you'd ever need" in a movie musical.

Needs Remastering I fell in love with “This Is Me” from the trailer and am writing this review based only on that song. The volume level on the track is really bad and the beat completely overwhelms the vocals. I hope another version of this song comes out because the final product on this album is very poor.
